All Fired Up

Soooo... we mentioned a long time ago that we'd want to either remove the mantle and replace with a shelf. However, plans changed because we realized the mantle got really hot when the fireplace was on for an extended period of time. Our other option was to paint it. We were sure what colour, but it was either black or white. We decided to try white first. And I think we're going to stop there. Take a look at the before and after pictures and tell us what you think.

The Great Room Progress

So it's a little plain right now. I ended up finding some great deals on pillows at Bouclair. I knew I wanted to have purple accents in this room, but I wasn't willing to pay $25/pillow. Anyway, I lucked out and the next week I walked in there, all the pillows I wanted were half price. Not bad...

Anyway, so the current focus right now is supposed to be the Great Room and Kitchen, but I find myself purchasing things for other rooms right now. :S At this rate, we're never going to finish one room. Hopefully, we'll be able to find some great deals during boxing day (week).

Only 5 more days till Christmas!

Oh yes, and Mattamy is scheduled to come out here this week and fix up some issues in our home. We haven't heard from them since our meeting, not sure if they were supposed to call us on Friday to remind us, and tell us which rooms to clear out . Oh well, I guess we'll see tomorrow.

Furnished: The Great Room

It all started with this sofa...

Most comfortable piece of furniture I've sat on in awhile that was still absolutely gorgeous in white leather and chrome legs. Kay, the only downside to this sofa was that it was about $4000. However, I was able to get this priced down to $3500 including tax, but... it was the floor model. Unfortunately for the store that I will not name, they didn't have the leather samples for this sofa, nor did they have the sofa in store since they brought it to the Home Show yesterday (which also was a deal breaker). I had made an appointment at the beginning of the week with the salesperson to go see that exact sofa today and purchase it along with a flat screen tv. Anyway, long story short, they lost our sale.

I took it as a sign that it wasn't meant to be, and I thought about the price and decided, maybe it wasn't such a great idea. But man, that sectional is awesome.

So to grieve about that loss (well just me, Dennis was absolutely relieved) and since we were already out, we decided to look elsewhere.

We ended up at The Bay. And this caught Dennis' eye...

It wasn't leather, it wasn't white, it wasn't a sectional, but... it was the right size, it had clean lines, the right shape, the right price and it was comfortable. They had various fabric colours, but we stuck to the same one as the model, in the charcoal. Not quite black, and not quite grey. It was perfect. Honestly, the picture just doesn't do this couch any justice.

The whole point of this room is for it to be lived in. The white sofa screamed "have a seat, but don't put your feet up.", this couch says, "take a load off, relax and enjoy yourself". I'm really happy we chose this. Now.. all it needs is some pillows. Yay, sewing time!

We also purchased a 1.5 chair. It's awesome because it fits the two of us comfortably.

And then there was the Ottoman. What sold us was the fact that it had storage space. I guess this is where we'll keep the remote controls, magazine, wii remotes, etc.

Originally I really wanted a sectional, I think we both did. But since we're in such a small space, this sectional may work in this room, but in a larger room oriented differently, the sectional may not fit. Especially with that white couch, in order to get it to fit, we'd have to place the long side on the side wall, and the lounge part on the short wall, so the couch wouldn't be able to face the television. If we were to turn it to be across from the tv, it would be too long for the back wall, and the lounger would be by the doorway. So in a way, getting seperate pieces allows us to change the setup as we see fit whereas a sectional dictates where it should be placed. I'm still pro sectional for the basement though (once we finish it).

All in all, we ended up saving a huge chunk of change by going this route. It's always nice to have the voice of reason come shopping with me. I tend to get a bit carried away sometimes. So, I think until we move in, this is it for the shopping right now. Time to pay some bills...
